5 TIPS TO RELAX WHILE CRAFTING

Crafting is the perfect hobby for relaxation as it gives you an escape from the stresses of life. It's something for you to focus on and get lost in as you create something before your very eyes. Sometimes you might find you get distracted or catch your mind drifting away from the hobby. To manage this we've put together some tips to bring the relaxation back into your crafting hobbies.

Pick the right spot to craft

Having a designated spot can help you get back into the craft zone as it's familiar and you know exactly why you're there.

Taking things slowly and really focusing on one simple and repetitive action can be really therapeutic. If that’s how you feel, then crochet could be a great hobby for you to try out. Plus, you can create a variety of things with it that both you and your loved ones can enjoy! To get started, you need to get a crochet hook and any colored yarn you like.

Once you have your tools, you’ll be focusing on learning how to do the main stitches that will be needed to work on any project you pick.

Avoid distractions

How many times have you lost your concentration while crafting because of your phone or someone in your home called you to ask for something? Suddenly you come out your relaxation and you're brought back to the real world ("No, I can't cover that shift", "I don't know where your keys are! That's why we have the hooks!").

Let everyone in your home know that your crafting time is a time for relaxation and to not disturb you unless absolutely necessary. Put your phone on silent until you’re done crafting so that you don’t get tempted to check for your emails or view any notifications. These should apply even if you’re crafting with friends, as you can spend more time focusing on crafts and talking to them rather than have your attention go elsewhere.

Put on your favorite music

Some people concentrate better if they have a nice soundtrack playing in the background. If you’re one of those, then definitely consider putting on your favorite songs while you craft.

If you find songs with lyrics distracting but would prefer to avoid complete silence, then you could try listening to classical music or playing some relaxing nature noises. Music can be a perfect way to make your hobby more relaxing.

Stay comfortable

As a passionate crafter, you may be spending hours sitting in the same place working on your project. As such, it’s important that you’re well-prepared to make that time enjoyable not only for your mind but also for your body. Notice how you feel when you sit in your crafting spot, does the table seem too far away? Do you feel cramped? Is your back hurting after just a few minutes?

All of those issues can be resolved with the right chair that’s adjusted to the height of your table. Invest time and finances into organizing your crafting space so that you can spend as much time as you like doing what you love, without sacrificing comfort.

Take breaks

Sometimes, even our favorite crafting project might make us feel frustrated. It might be that you're finding the next step difficult or simply having one of those days where crafting just feels harder than usual. This is totally normal and it’s okay to take a break when that happens by either ending your crafting time earlier or switching to another project. Walk around the room or get some fresh air as a way to reset your mind and body.

Crafting should never feel like a chore. It’s something you do to have fun and relax. That’s why it’s so important to take a moment away from it if it’s starting to feel less enjoyable. You’ll probably find it a lot easier the day after, once your mind is well-rested and ready to give it another try.

Treat yourself...

Finally, some people find crafting the most relaxing thing to do with other people, and if that’s the case then you can still apply a few of the above tips but don’t force yourself to isolate!

We've got some ideas for remote craft days too so don't let geography get between you and a good time with friends! Everyone’s different and the most important thing is discovering what really works for you.
